Sometimes another person’s unwanted item can turnout to be another person’s treasure.

One place people have been known to stumble across some useful items have been local garage sales, and United Way team members from the Johnson City Press are hoping their sale Saturday will continue the trend.

Press employees, as well as people from the community, are welcome to either donate garage sale items or they can sell the items themselves by running their own booth for a $25 fee. Tables will also be provided to participants for an additional fee of $5.

The garage sale will be set up in the parking lot in front of the building from 8 a.m. until noon for anyone looking to sell or buy any items donated. All money raised will go to the United Way of Washington County.

Circulation Director Phil Hensley said the entire event is conducted by the Press and the company wants it to be a safe community garage sale.

“The employees will be setting up the booth areas, managing the booths, providing tables to those who need it (and) directing the vendors to their spots, which we’ll be assigning to them on a first-come, first-served basis,” he said.

Items have already been collected for the sale and were stored in the Press warehouse for the event. Hensley said he was impressed by the support of people from the community who have already donated items for the sale.

He said the Press is considered a United Way pacesetter company that is actively involved in early campaigning for the agency, and United Way is a cause it stands behind.

“Being a pacesetter company, we really want to show the way,” Hensley said. “Being a media company, we really feel like we can help United Way get their word out about ... the agencies and the people they serve in the community, and we feel like that’s an important story to tell.”

All donated items not sold at the sale will be taken to the Salvation Army.

Some items that have proven to be top sellers in the past include children’s clothing, power tools, sporting equipment, electronics and household items.

For information about the sale, call the Press at 929-3111 or stop in at 204 W. Main St.
