Bucs shut out by Canisius' Pierce

Canisius’s Rohn Pierce tossed a three-hit shutout and the Golden Griffins won the second game of their series with East Tennessee State, winning 2-0 on Saturday at Thomas Stadium.Pierce took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and needed only 87 pitches to complete the shutout in two hours and six minutes. The junior, who had already beaten then-No. 5 N.C. State and USA Player of the Year Carlos Rodon, improved to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to .56. He struck out six and walked none.ETSU junior Jimmy Nesselt suffered the loss, despite allowing only two runs on six hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out two. Logan Rice and Jared Burton kept their scoreless inning streaks intact, keeping Canisius off the board in the final three innings.Rice has tossed 8 2/3 scoreless frames to start the year. He gave up two hits and struck out two in 1 1/3 innings. Burton has seven scoreless appearances, 6 2/3 innings, and only allowed one hit this year. He kept the Griffs hitless in the final 1 2/3 of Saturday’s game.Canisius got both of its runs in the second. Jesse Puscheck and Jimmy Luppens led off with back-to-back doubles to plate the first run. Luppens scored on a double by Brett Siddall.The Bucs finally snapped Pierce’s no-hit bid when ETSU picked up singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.The Bucs, who were shutout for the second time in the first 10 games of the season, dipped to 5-5, while Canisius improved to 5-3. ETSU looks to salvage a win in the series finale this afternoon at 1:05 p.m.
