BRISTOL — David Crockett pressed on to score a season sweep of Daniel Boone on Monday night.Using a full-court press in the first half and getting a combined 53 points from Dustin Day and Patrick Good, the Pioneers defeated the Trailblazers 76-61 in a District 1-AAA boys basketball quarterfinal at Viking Hall.The No. 4 seeded Pioneers (21-11), who won both regular-season meetings against the Trailblazers, advanced to face top-seeded Dobyns-Bennett in Wednesday’s semifinal round. Boone, which entered as the No. 5 seed, ended its season at 16-15.“They stepped up and played with a lot of energy,” David Crockett coach John Good said of his team. “You couldn’t have asked for any more effort than what they were bringing tonight. That’s what we’ve talked about all year, buying into a process. They’ve learned what we want from them, and they showed it tonight.”Day led the Pioneers with 28 points and eight rebounds, while Patrick Good had a double-double of 25 points and 13 assists. Luke Hopson added a 13-point effort, which included making three shots behind the 3-point arc.“Our chemistry is just amazing,” Day said. “We have such good chemistry on and off the court. We come in early to get shots up. We just have such chemistry as friends.“I think we can be really good, make a run and do really well as a team where we have such good chemistry. I feel pretty confident against Dobyns-Bennett. We just have to stick to our gameplan.”The Pioneers had no problem sticking to the plan against the Trailblazers. They dominated the first half, up 18-8 at the end of one quarter. They continued to double up Boone’s score much of second quarter with a 40-21 halftime advantage.The Trailblazers never got closer than 15 points in the second half.Dillon Reppart paced Boone with 15 points, and Aaron Shelton finished with 13 points, before going down with a knee injury in the fourth quarter. “They tried to battle,” Boone coach Ryan Arnold said. “We just didn’t recover from the early go and there wasn’t much positive from this one. You look at this season and it was probably pretty good for us, to have a winning record and win 16 ballgames. We were close on a lot of them. There are four games where we could have had a 20-win season. But, Crockett is just playing phenomenal right now. John did a great job coaching, and I wish them the best of luck.”It was the end of the year for five Boone seniors — Zach Rafalowksi, Ty Jones, Tyler Ledford, Reppart and Shelton.Crockett continues its season, advancing both in the district tournament and moving on to next week’s regional. Its head coach called it one of the best efforts of the season.“They’re such a big rival and coach Arnold does such a great job,” Good said. “His teams are always going to compete and they’re always prepared.“We got such a good effort from Day tonight. We’ve been telling him, he’s a big key for us. He can score under the basket, get in good position and deliver the mail. He delivered it tonight.”Daniel Boone (girls) 53Tennessee High 42The No. 4-seeded Lady ’Blazers scored the first six points of the game and led the rest of the way against the homestanding Lady Vikings. Boone (19-11) held a 17-10 advantage after one quarter and was ahead 26-19 at halftime. Six straight points by Sheena Johnson cut the lead to a single point. The No. 5-seeded Lady Vikings would slice the lead one again early in the fourth quarter on a pair of 3-point goalsHowever, with 13 points from Jaclyn Jenkins and 10 from Autumn Bradshaw, the Lady ’Blazers were able to answer each challenge.“It was important to get off to a good start,” Boone coach Travis Mains said. “About a week and a half ago, they jumped on us and ran us out of the building. We made a couple of adjustments on how to guard them, and that really frustrated their offense.“They hit those two threes and cut it to one, and it looked like the momentum was going to turn. But, we had a stop and we finished with a strong lay-up. We got another stop and got it back to five.”Still, Mains said a key was Boone’s defensive rebounding, which he said the best all season.It also didn’t hurt to have a balanced attack on the offensive end where Katelyn Cox and Taylor Carmichael each finished with nine points.Johnson paced Tennessee High with 14 points, but Boone limited the Lady Vikings’ other big scoring threat, Kelsey Stoops, to just five points. Lauryn Arzu also finished in double figures (11 points) for the Lady Vikings, who finished the season with a 12-13 mark.
