The J. C. Penney department store in a Tri-Cities mall is one of 33 identified as underperforming and slated for closure by the national chain.The Bristol Mall location, on the Virginia side of the border city, is expected to be shuttered by early May, according to a press release sent Wednesday by J. C. Penney Company, Inc. announcing the closures as part of a nationwide financial turnaround effort.The closures are expected to save the company approximately $65 million beginning this year.The move will eliminate approximately 2,000 positions across the 33 stores, and the company said eligible employees will receive separation benefits packages.
