BUTLER — Two men were arrested by the Carter County Sheriff's Department following an incident at 2 a.m. Saturday.
Deputy Myles Cook said he spoke with Haley Herd, 21, who told him she had been dating Richard Charles Shaw, 58, 382 T. Greer Road, Mountain City. She said she had broken off the relationship on Thursday.
Cook said Herd told him she had returned to her residence at 625 Whaleytown Road on Saturday morning to gather some of her possessions. She said a neighbor had alerted Shaw of her return.
She told the deputy that Shaw arrived with another man, Melvin Glen Campbell, 43, 210 Marion Branch Road, Elizabethton. Herd said a man who was with her started talking to Shaw, but was chased off by Shaw.
She said Shaw started chasing her with some type of tool with a wooden handle. As she was running from Shaw, she said Campbell began breaking out the windows in her car. She said she then called 911.
As Cook continued to investigate the incident, he said, he checked Herd's car and found the front windshield, the rear windshield and the driver's side rear widow had all been broken out. The glass was lying inside, which he said indicated the force came from outside.
Herd also said she could not find the keys to her car. Shaw said he had the keys in the front pocket of his pants.
Looking in the rear of Shaw's truck, Cook found a flat-head shovel and a broom, both with wooden handles that fit the description of the weapons Herd had described.
Cook arrested Shaw on a charge of aggravated assault and Campbell was charged with vandalism over $500.
