PINEY FLATS — An unidentified person died late Saturday afternoon when their vehicle drove into Boone Lake and became completely submerged. According to the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. at a residence located on Charlie Avenue near Piney Flats.Authorities found the vehicle completely underwater upon arriving at the scene. Diver's with the Kingsport Life Saving Crew located a deceased individual inside the submerged vehicle, an SCSO spokeswoman said.
Witnesses reportedly told investigators the car lost control after turning into the driveway of a Charlie Avenue home. The vehicle reportedly traveled down the driveway, through the backyard of the residence and over an embankment before landing in the water.
Although circumstances surrounding the wreck did not appear to be suspicious, authorities said an investigation is ongoing. The victim’s name was not released Saturday night pending notification of family.
The Avoca Volunteer Fire Department assisted the Kingsport Life Saving Crew and SCSO on the call.
