ERWIN — The Three Rivers Conference welcome wagon has been kind to Sullivan South.The Rebels recorded their second shutout in conference action this year, beating Unicoi County, 68-0, Friday. South (2-0, 5-0) has outscored its first two conference opponents 109-0 since its drop to 4A.“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” Rebels head coach Sam Haynie said. “We knew Unicoi was a bit banged up tonight, but we had some things go good for us early. We’ve been playing good defense all year long and we knew Unicoi had the athletes.”Blake Christian scored on runs from 12 and 15 yards out, and Dylan Wieger connected with Jacob Strickler to give the Rebels a 21-0 lead after one quarter.Weiger (9-13, 123 yards, 2 TDs), Evan Headrick (seven catches, 128 yards) and Blake Christian (70 yards, TDs) all attributed to the halftime score of 47-0.It was all business, according to Weiger.“We just try to run our offense fast,” he said. “We came out and ran the ball well and had success throwing it.”While the offense flowed, the defense stood its ground, including pressure on the air attack and ground game. Christian Comsa highlighted the effort with a pick-six right before halftime from 46 yards out for the final score of the first half.“It was a big play,” said Comsa, who gad seven tackles. “It was a good boost and I thought it helped shut them down.”Cody Shipley had six tackles and a sack while Caleb Johnson led all tacklers with 10.Nick Noel and backup quarterback Grant Ward attributed the final TDs in the second half.Unicoi County (0-2, 1-4) was without junior tailback Luke Fronckoksi and wideout Keith Arrowood, among three starters but had solid efforts on defense from John Burnett and Hunter Burnett with nine tackles each. Cody Rogers also had an interception for the Blue Devils.Sullivan South squares off against Daniel Boone next week and the task is tall ahead, Haynie said.“We know Boone’s got a good ballclub,” he added. “Our guys do a good job staying focused and continue to get better each week.”The Blue Devils will have the bye week coming up before traveling to Sullivan East on Friday, Oct. 4.
