A North Roan Street bank closed temporarily Friday after a man demanded money from a teller and ran away, Johnson City police said.
“This morning at approximately 10:22 a.m., we had a robbery at one of the branches of the Eastman Credit Union,” said Johnson City Police Department Sgt. Kevin Peters during a news conference. “A white male entered the store, demanded some money from one of the tellers and then exited the store.”
“It was pretty quick,” Peters later added. “He was in and out within a minute.”
Police said the suspect, who is about 6 feet tall and between 150-160 pounds, wore a black and orange-billed Baltimore Orioles hat with an “O” on the front.
“(The hat) is distinctive as far as a feature we will be looking for,” Peters said.
The man also wore a purple long-sleeve shirt, dark pants and socks on his hands during the robbery, a JCPD news release said.
“The male then exited the bank after obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot toward Carroll Creek Road,” according to the news release.
The amount of money taken from the bank is not being released.
“We are not going to release the amount right now,” Peters said.
Also, Peters was unable to comment on whether the suspect had a weapon.
“That’s part of the investigation that is still going on,” Peters said. “We’re not going to release that.”
The bank, located at 4307 N. Roan St., temporarily closed and directed customers to other ECU locations after police left the scene.
Peters said witnesses were inside the bank while the incident occurred and no injuries were reported.
“There were some people in the store,” Peters said. “How many, I’m not real sure.”
Police are still gathering information about the robbery, Peters said.
“We’re just asking anybody in the public if they have any information or might know somebody who might be involved in this incident if they would come forward and contact the Johnson City Police Department,” Peters said.
No other details have been released, and anyone with more information is urged to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 434-6166 or Crimestoppers at 434-6158.
