A Gray man was Tuesday in connection with buying a car using a worthless check as a down payment, according to a news release.
Christopher Michael Sturgill, 25, 6319 Kingsport Hwy., Gray, was charged with worthless checks over $10,000.
Johnson City police said in a news release that Sturgill bought a car at Johnson City Honda and wrote a personal check for the down payment.
“Weeks after the purchase, it was discovered the account lacked sufficient funding to support the check,” according to the news release.
Sturgill was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on $10,000 bond.
He was scheduled to appear in Sessions Court today.
