ELIZABETHTON – A Carter County deputy said a man who was wanted on outstanding warrants attracted her attention because he was driving at speeds reaching 70 miles per hour on Tenn. Highway 67 on Sunday night. As a result of the motor vehicle stop, the driver will now be serving 139 days in jail.
Lt. Penny Cornett said she was traveling eastbound on the highway when she noticed a car speeding in front of her. When the car reached 70 mph she displayed her emergency lights and pulled the car over.
The driver was identified as Michael Dylan Sheets, 21, 800 Rolling Hills Drive, Apartment 8, Johnson City. Cornett discovered Sheets' driver's license was taken because of a DUI in Washington County in 2011. He was also served with outstanding warrants charging him with violation of probation in Carter County.
Sheets appeared in Sessions Court on Monday. Judge John Walton sentenced him to 30 days jail for a first offense of violation of probation and 109 days, to run consecutively, on a second offense of violation of probation. His probation was extended six months. Walton also set another court date for Aug. 20 for Sheets to appear with his new driver's license.
