Renewal in downtown Johnson City finds higher gear

Momentum. That’s a word a lot of people are throwing around about the state of downtown Johnson City.

While the downtown area was once the center of activity for Washington County, that activity began to dwindle as development moved outward. But that’s an attitude that’s changing as more and more developments occur in the downtown area, signaling the onset of major revitalization.

Staff Writers Madison Mathews, Gary B. Gray and Rex Barber have examined the trend in a special package of articles in the Sunday, June 10, edition of Johnson City Press. You'll find articles about developments and plans in the downtown area, stormwater mitigation efforts spurring renewal and East Tennessee State University President Brian Noland's belief that the university and downtown can benefit each other and improve together.

"We’re just trying to get a sense of what the options will be for the institution, but the goal is constant: How do we advance ETSU and advance Johnson City, because the success of both are mutually dependent," Noland told Barber.

The Johnson City Press is available at newsstands throughout the region or through subscription. Subscribers to either the print or online editions of Johnson City Press have full access to the electronic site.
