HAMPTON – No one was reported injured when a man allegedly shot at truck that had people inside on Saturday afternoon.
James Edward Scalf Jr., 41, 186 Swimming Pool Road, was arrested by Deputy Paul Morel of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department on four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of reckless endangerment and one charge of domestic assault.
Susan Lemley, Jonesborough, told Deputy Michael Freeman that Scalf was her ex boyfriend. She went to Scalf’s residence with her new boyfriend to retrieve her property. She said when they arrived, Scalf met them by firing three shots into the air. Lemley said she got out of the truck to try to calm Scalf down.
Lyman said Scalf pushed Lemley to the ground, injuring her leg. He said Scalf then fired a round into the truck, hitting the lower middle of the passenger side of the truck. He said there were two juveniles, aged 17 and 13, sitting in the rear of the passenger cab at the time. Freeman said there were multiple impacts from a firearm on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Lyman and the juveniles described Scalf’s weapon as a brown rifle with a black barrel and a banana clip. Lyman said he was registered to carry a firearm and he had a pistol in a black lock box under the seat.
Deputy Morel and Constable Tim Lyons went to Scalf’s residence. They said Scalf told the them Lyman had assaulted him and fired three to four rounds at his residence. The officers could not find any trace of a bullet hole in the residence or any ejected brass. The officers were also not able to to locate the rifle Scalf allegedly used.
Scalf is scheduled to answer the charges in Sessions Court on Sept. 4.
