HAMPTON – A Carter County deputy responding to a 911 call about a man threatening to shoot a woman on Monday evening said the call was unfounded, but a man was taken into custody on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm.
Sgt. Derrick Hamm, Deputy Michele Meade, Constable Bobby Trivette and Constable Tim Lyons responded to the call. Hamm said the officers made contact with Charles D. Hopkins, 60, inside the bathroom of his residence at 104 Nave St., Lot 6. Hamm said a Harrington and Richardson single-shot 12-gauge shotgun was also found in the bathroom. Hamm said Hopkins admitted to being convicted of a felony.
Hamm said a records check showed Hopkins had been convicted in 1995 of one count of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated assault in 2005.
Hamm said that after speaking with the residents, the original reason for the response was unfounded.
Hopkins is scheduled to answer the charge in Sessions Court on May 6.
