ELIZABETHTON – A bird expert says the appearance of a nesting pair of bald eagles in Carter County is an exciting, but not unexpected development.

Stanley and Carolyn Honeycutt told the Elizabethton Star (http://bit.ly/16JmKrj ) they noticed the eagles at Wilbur Lake and didn't initially realize they were making a nest.

But about a month ago, the couple noted they always saw the birds in the same tree and noticed they were carrying large branches to the top of it.

The Honeycutts contacted some birders they knew, who contacted Rick Knight of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. Knight said the eagles are the first known nesting pair in Carter County.

Knight said it was a matter of time before eagles took up local residence, because their range has been expanding.
